Stye or Chalazion? The Difference, Safe Care and When to Seek an Eye Exam

Stye versus chalazion

A stye is a tender inflamed bump near an eyelash or within the lid. A chalazion usually forms when an oil gland becomes blocked and may be painless. Redness and swelling can overlap, so a photo alone cannot confirm the cause.

What can I do at home?

Place a clean, comfortably warm—not hot—compress on the closed eyelid for a few minutes and repeat during the day if it feels soothing. Wash your hands and avoid squeezing or rubbing the lump. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses if they irritate the area.

Do I need antibiotics?

Not every stye or chalazion needs antibiotics. An eye specialist decides whether there is an infection that needs treatment or whether a large, recurring or vision-affecting lump needs another approach. Do not use leftover drops or another person's medicine.

When should I arrange an examination?

Arrange an examination if the lump persists, grows, returns in the same spot or affects vision. Seek faster care for severe pain, redness spreading around the eye, fever or difficulty opening the eye.

How can I reduce recurrences?

Hand hygiene, removing eye makeup before bed and not sharing eye products are sensible steps. If you also have recurring eyelid inflammation or lash crusting, treating that underlying problem may reduce repeated lumps.

Frequently asked questions

Should I squeeze a stye to make it drain?

No. Squeezing can worsen or spread inflammation. Use a gentle warm compress and seek assessment if it does not improve.

Is a chalazion contagious?

Usually not. It is generally a blocked oil gland rather than an infection passed by touch. Good hand and eye-product hygiene still makes sense.

Do tea bags treat eyelid lumps?

There is no proven reason to place potentially unclean bags or liquids near the eye. Use a clean, comfortably warm compress.

Does a lump need a procedure?

Most improve without one. An ophthalmologist decides whether further treatment is needed if it persists or affects vision.

Medical note: This guide is for education and does not replace an eye examination. Sudden vision loss, severe pain or an eye injury needs urgent assessment.
