Corneal Abrasion: What to Do if Something Scratches Your Eye
Quick answer
A corneal abrasion is a surface scratch on the clear front covering of the eye. It can cause pain, tearing and light sensitivity. Do not rub the eye or remove an embedded object with a tool. Contact-lens wear, reduced vision or severe pain needs prompt assessment.
How does a scratch happen?
A fingernail, paper, makeup brush or small particle under the lid can scratch the cornea. Even a small abrasion may hurt because the corneal surface is very sensitive. A fast-moving object or forceful injury can hide a deeper wound, so take significant trauma seriously.
Safer first steps
Wash your hands, remove a contact lens if it comes out easily, and gently rinse with clean water if loose dust is present. Do not rub, use tweezers or swabs, or press on the eye. Go to emergency care for an embedded object or significant injury.
How is it diagnosed?
The clinician checks vision, cornea and eyelid, and may use a special dye to reveal the scratch under suitable light. They also look for a trapped particle or infection. The abrasion's size and cause, and contact-lens use, affect treatment, so one drop is not right for everyone.
How is it treated?
Depending on the examination, the clinician may recommend lubrication, pain relief or another medicine and may recheck a larger or higher-risk abrasion. Do not use numbing or steroid drops on your own; some drops can damage the cornea when misused. Do not resume contact lenses until advised.
Chemical splash or contact lenses?
A chemical splash is different from a simple scratch: start flushing the eye with water immediately and seek emergency care. A corneal scratch in a contact-lens wearer raises concern for infection and needs same-day assessment. Tell the clinician what lenses you use and for how long.
Frequently asked questions
Should I cover the eye with a patch?
Do not press on or patch the eye on your own. Follow the clinician's instructions after the injury is assessed.
Can I use numbing drops for pain?
Do not use them at home unless a clinician gives clear instructions. Misuse can harm the cornea.
Can I wear contact lenses?
Avoid them until the surface has healed and the clinician confirms it is safe to restart.
When should I go to emergency care?
Go promptly for reduced vision, severe pain, an embedded object, major trauma, a chemical splash or a scratch while wearing contacts.
