Chemical in the Eye? First Aid Steps to Start Immediately

Start rinsing immediately

Begin flushing at once without waiting. Gently hold the eyelids open and direct water away from the other eye. Clean tap water is better than a delay while searching for a special solution. Keep rinsing while help is arranged or on the way to emergency care.

Safer steps while flushing

If you wear contact lenses, remove them if they come out easily during rinsing. Do not rub the eye, add vinegar or another substance to neutralize the chemical, or try to remove an object stuck in the eye. Bring the product container or a photo of its label if possible.

Do not delay emergency care

The eye may feel better after rinsing, but some chemicals cause damage that continues or becomes apparent later. Prompt assessment is still needed; clinicians may continue irrigation and examine the eye's surface, cornea and eyelids.

Dry powders

If dry powder is on the face, gently brush it away from the skin without sweeping it into the eye, then begin flushing immediately. If you are unsure what the substance is or what to do, do not spend time searching; seek emergency help and keep rinsing.

Prevention

Wear protective eyewear when handling strong cleaners, batteries or workshop chemicals, and store products away from children. Never transfer chemicals into water bottles or unlabelled containers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rinse with tap water?

Yes. Start with clean running water immediately if saline is not right beside you. Do not delay rinsing to find another option.

How long should I rinse?

Start at once and continue while arranging or travelling for emergency care; the medical team will decide what is needed after examination.

Should I add something to neutralize the cleaner?

No. Do not add vinegar, lemon or another substance; flush with water and seek emergency care.

Do I still need an exam if the pain improves after rinsing?

Yes. Less pain does not rule out surface injury, so prompt assessment is still needed.

Medical note: This guide is for education and does not replace an eye examination. Sudden vision loss, severe pain or an eye injury needs urgent assessment.
