Retinopathy of Prematurity: Why Screening Appointments Matter

What is retinopathy of prematurity?

Retinal blood vessels grow gradually during pregnancy and normally finish developing near the expected time of birth. In some premature infants, vessels may grow abnormally. Many cases are mild and improve, but a smaller group needs close monitoring or treatment.

Who needs screening?

The neonatal team identifies infants at risk and schedules screening based on gestational age, birth weight, the baby's condition and local criteria. Screening rules vary between countries and hospitals, so do not use an online number to decide that your baby can skip an examination.

How is the retina examined?

An ophthalmologist examines the retina after drops widen the pupils and may use a special instrument to view its outer areas. The examination can be briefly uncomfortable, and the team uses comfort and safety measures. The family should be told the findings and the next appointment date.

Why is keeping every appointment important?

Vessel changes can progress without a visible sign, and delay can miss the right time for treatment. Write down each appointment and confirm the plan with the neonatal or eye team before leaving hospital. Stop screening only when the ophthalmologist tells you to.

If treatment is needed

If the condition threatens vision, a retinal specialist explains options, which may include laser or an injection into the eye depending on the vessels and the infant's condition. Some children need follow-up after treatment and longer-term checks of vision, prescription and alignment.

Frequently asked questions

Can parents spot retinopathy of prematurity by looking at the baby's eyes?

Often there is no visible sign at home. A retinal examination is needed to find disease that requires follow-up.

What if we miss one screening appointment?

Contact the neonatal or eye team immediately to arrange another appointment; do not wait on your own.

Does every premature baby need screening?

The team decides based on risk factors and local guidance. Ask for your baby's written plan.

Does follow-up end after treatment?

Not always. The child may need further checks and later reviews of vision, refraction and the retina.

Medical note: This guide is for education and does not replace an eye examination. Sudden vision loss, severe pain or an eye injury needs urgent assessment.
