Sudden Severe Eye Pain and Blurred Vision: Angle Closure Is an Emergency
Quick answer
Sudden severe eye pain with redness, blurred vision or halos, sometimes with headache or nausea, needs emergency eye care. The cause may be a rapid pressure rise when the eye's drainage angle closes. Do not wait for a routine appointment or try leftover drops.
What is angle closure?
Fluid is continually made and drained through a small channel near the iris, the colored part of the eye. In some eyes this channel becomes blocked, causing pressure to rise quickly. That differs from chronic glaucoma, which may progress quietly without obvious pain.
Signs that should not wait
Pain may start in one eye and be severe, with redness, blurred vision or colored halos around lights. Headache, nausea or vomiting can occur too. Not everyone has every symptom, so sudden severe pain with a vision change is enough to seek urgent help.
How is it diagnosed?
An ophthalmologist checks eye pressure and examines the drainage angle and iris. Both eyes may be assessed even when symptoms affect one eye. Prompt examination matters because sustained high pressure can injure the nerve that carries visual information to the brain.
Treatment starts urgently
The emergency team uses appropriate pressure-lowering medicines and monitors the response. A laser opening in the iris may then help fluid move more freely. The ophthalmologist decides when and whether to treat each eye based on examination. Do not use someone else's medicine or stop a regular prescription on your own.
How is this different from chronic glaucoma?
Chronic glaucoma often causes no pain or obvious blur early on, while an acute attack tends to cause sudden, noticeable symptoms. Having chronic glaucoma or using pressure drops does not make new severe pain safe to ignore. Sudden pain with reduced vision needs urgent assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Is an acute angle-closure attack the same as chronic glaucoma?
No. Acute closure starts suddenly and can raise pressure quickly. Chronic glaucoma usually develops more gradually and may have no early symptoms.
Can I wait until morning?
Do not wait with sudden severe pain, redness or blurred vision. Go to emergency eye care now.
Can home drops treat the attack?
Do not start drops on your own. Some medicines may be unsuitable, and treatment requires pressure measurement and an eye examination.
Can the other eye be affected?
The drainage angle may be narrow in both eyes, so the ophthalmologist checks both and decides whether preventive treatment is needed.
